In Lights Starkly Different
Innova #1 032
Released March 2020

From beginning to end, Whiting’s album – as the title implies – has lots of variety. He performs on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, and the electronics are just as varied. With music from John Mayrose, Judith Shatin, Ed Martin, Jeff Herriott, Alexis Bacon, and Robin Heifetz, this debut solo album has been met with critical acclaim. Reviewers have stated “Whiting is a fine performer and superb advocate for the music he champions.” (Fanfare Magazine) and “This is contemporary music at its best” (The Whole Note).

New Music by Living Composers, Vol 2
Petrichor
Released February 2021

Appears on By Fool’s Luck and Wise Design

By Fool’s Luck and Wise Design by Robin Julian Heifetz, is a mixed media composition that was composed in 2013-2014 for soprano saxophone and prerecorded electronic sounds. The digital sounds were generated with REplayPLAYer_4.0 and processed with GRM Tools. The score utilized both proportional and graphic notational systems, aleatory techniques as well as theatrical elements. It was intended as a very intense, virtuosically demanding, and hyperdramatic work.

Memos: Music of Erik Lund
Centaur CRC3687
Released March 2018

Drew Whiting and Casey Dierlam appear on …as we forgive those…

…as we forgive those…, is a meditation on this challenging phrase, found tucked in the middle of the Lord’s Prayer. Erik Lund composes music as analogies and commentaries. As such, his works are usually born of ideas and sources that are not inherently musical, where he takes as his task the process of transforming these ideas into the sound domain. The result has been music that has been described as “dramatic and gripping” (Martin Adams, Irish Times). Erik Lund is emeritus professor of music composition at the University of Illinois, a composer of acoustic and electroacoustic music, and an active performer of both composed and improvised music.

Percy Grainger:  Music for Saxophones
NAXOS 8.573228
Released December 2015

Appears on Fugue No. IV from Well Tempered Clavier Book I – J.S. Bach arr. Grainger and Angelus ad Virginem (The Annunciation Carol) – Anonymous arr. Grainger

Percy Grainger called the saxophone ‘the world’s finest wind-tone tool, the most voice-like’, and wrote for it a series of fascinating but hitherto little-explored works. These arrangements are special in that, unusually, Grainger largely abandoned his idea of ‘elastic scoring’ and noted specific instrumental configurations. The selections include the music of J.S. Bach, British and Norwegian folksongs, old polyphonic instrumental and vocal music, as well as two original compositions, each indelibly stamped with Grainger’s experiences as pianist, folk-song collector, and proponent of early music. This recording was curated by Joyce Griggs.
